Journalism in Finland typically requires a master's degree in communications, social sciences, or political science. Tampere University's journalism program is the most prestigious. Journalistiliitto is a strong union with one of the highest membership rates in any Finnish sector.

Yle (the public broadcaster) is by far the largest employer and offers the most stable positions. Sanoma (Helsingin Sanomat, Ilta-Sanomat) and Aller are the major private publishers. Print's long decline has forced newsrooms to cut staff and broaden journalist roles into multimedia production. Freelancing is common but financially precarious.
